Six in a row! Wet weather and a full complement of players was a great way to start the day. After some disruption earlier this week as to whether the game would proceed or not, it was great to see RRC arrive with a team ready for a good game of footy.
The game started off steady with both teams testing each other and the weather conditions. It wasn’t too long before Carlos put our first points on the board with a nice try. Swen followed up soon after with a long range try. He displayed great evasion skills as he ran through several defenders. RRC made a fierce effort on attack and celebrated their efforts with a converted try. The score was close, 14-7 to Oemie in the first twenty minutes. Coach Monty encouraged the boys to, ‘not to let them cross the line again’. Defensively, Oemie maintained their composure and RRC did not score anymore points for the rest of the game. Niels crossed the line (his second try for the season) and Brian made a brilliant break and scored his first try for the season. Brian was previously caught short from the try line by half a meter, so his try was well deserved.
During half time, Chiel rallied the forward to dominate the scrums. A few changes were made with Henk coming into the second row and Oumar playing on the flank. Coach Monty reminded the team that they had to start running the systems more effectively. With an influx of new players, the team weren’t as clinical as they could be. An RRC injury detected during the half time reduced team numbers for both sides. A frustrating affair for those Oemie players who were on the bench but keen to take the field.
The next forty minutes started off well with Chiel charging across the line to score. Swen racked up another two tries with Anthonie and Mikey both running in very classy tries. Despite the points difference, it was disappointing to see a lot of handling errors during the second half. Although these mishaps did not impact the overall outcome, basic errors in the absence of any real pressure should not be happening at this stage of the season. The game was got a bit niggly at times, but a few tussles and a yellow card was enough to calm both teams.
Brian was named player of the day. Originally a front row player, this season has seen him switch to the third row due to his age and competition rules. He has really grown into a formidable number 8. He carried the ball strong during the game, executed good lineout throws and defensively worked extremely hard. He was off and on during the game, partly due to injury and partly because he had too, but for the time he was on the field, he was solid.
The end result, 57 – 7 to Oemoemenoe 2. RRC deserves to be acknowledged, they played competitively and had they brought a full squad the game would have been a lot closer. As for our boys, well done! Our sixth consecutive win and a comfortable first placein the pool play. We play Rotterdam Students next week. Fingers crossed our players maintain their enthusiasm and we can take away a team of 22 heren!
