13 Strong. An away game is always hard to secure players. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take away the 15 men we anticipated. Work responsibilities and injuries kept some of our core players at home. At one stage it looked like we did not have the minimum number of people for the game. We were extremely lucky that two of our Prima members came to support the boys. ‘Red Card’ and ‘John Cena’, thank you both for helping out.
Delft students had a full squad of 21 players. It was agreed before the commencement of the game that we would play 13 and Delft would reduce their numbers to 14. It was going to be a tough day in the office for our 13 Strong!
Although we were less in numbers we made up in spirit. Early in the first half, Oemie 2 stamped their mark on the game. Joshua cruised over the try line. It was answered by two tries from Delft. But the boys worked nice player combinations (even with one less man on the field) and totally dominated the first half. Two converted tries to Joshua and a converted try to Oumar gave us a comfortable lead going into half-time.
It was a physical second half. Our forwards were constantly putting their bodies on the line. Again, the scrums were consistent and the sharp execution of our ‘Blacks’ controlled the pace of the game. Contesting the rucks lead to turn overs and it wasn’t long before more points were added to our score. Monty’s tenacity got a bit too much for the opposition and one opponent decided to spear tackle him. The backs made some very fancy line breaks. Oumar, Sidney and Swen dotted down for a try each. All tries were converted. Joshua ran in his third try close to full time. Delft could not match the boys’ skill and only crossed the line once in the second half. Fulltime 49 -26 to Oemie 2.
It was a huge team effort today. Playing with less numbers can be discouraging. The boys really held it together during the entire 80 minutes. We suffered a few injuries during the game, but all players agreed – they wouldn’t have it any other way. Congratulations to Sidney who was our player of the day. Great improvement from his previous game and he showed marvelous growth as a player. This is Sidney’s second season. It is always a pleasure watching a player develop. He was on form, tackled anything that moved, displayedsafe hands, always gave his outside man an option via his support play and scored his second try for the season. We take our hats off to you boys. Five in a row. 13 Strong. Top of the pool!
Thank you, Peter and AJ, for being with us again today. It means a lot to us! Especially when we are short on numbers. Having two supporters on the sideline encouraging the team, running waters, taking photos and acting as fysio is really appreciated. Our next game is at home on 3 November. Come watch our boys. Bring your boots or your cheering voices!
