Home game. A game dedicated to Rens Schets. The boys were in their mourning bands. Coach Monty repeated his pre-game talk from the previous day. “We play for Rens today. When you are down, put that mourning band on your Oemie emblem and get up! Get up for Rens!” It was a motivating speech made more special with Carlos electing to play in honour of his Father.

We had good numbers for the first time. The team included two of our old boys (Harry and Harry), a brand-new player (Ali) and a good core group from the previous matches. Conditions were greasy on the pitch with a noticeable wind. The rain held off for most of the day. The boys were in a positive mood.

The first half of the game saw some good line breaks and nice running from the forwards. Our Tigers and Blacks were being executed with confidence and the forwards created a lot of pressure for the Delft defence. There was a good measure of experience in the Delft team which meant possible tries were spoilt. In general though, the boys had the most possession and territory in the first half. Leading 33 – 0 after 40 minutes.

The second half brought more points for Oemie 2. Nine tries were scored. Some remarkable long-range tries came from Anthonie, Andi and Max. Anthonie ran in a 70 metre try and Max ran in a 50 metre try. Both of them showed great speed and evasive running. Andi took a nice cross kick from Monty and ran in a 60 metre try. Delft did not go down without a fight and contested every play as best they could. A lot of pressure was being put on our conversions with a dedicated player continuously running the charge downs.

It was a difficult choice for player of the day. There were three contenders who were outstanding in their role during the game. Ben for his strength in the scrums, rucks, carries and offloads. Anthoniewith his support play, tactical play from the base of the scrum/rucks and four tries. But in the end, Carlos was awarded player of the day for the second time. He was at 100% for receiving the ball on restarts, did a number of try-saving tackles, scored two tries, was in support play for most phases and had an incredible tackle work rate. Final score 86-0. With a tough week coming to an end for our Oemoemenoe family it was nice to celebrate the memory of Rens with a meal together after the game, amongst his family and friends.
