Our game this weekend meant a lot more than usual. Not because it was our first game for the Trophy pool but because Oemoemenoe Club had lost a beloved member, Rens Schets. Today we played for him. As the boys wrapped their mourning bands on their wrists, Coach Monty said, “every time you fall, look at your band, put it over the Oemie emblem and get up! You know Rens isn’t here anymore to get up, so you get up and you play for him’. And played they did….
A minute silence was shared before the game started. We had the kick-off. Deniel put a nice high ball 15 meters in. Waterland took possession but Oumar did a wonderful left-handed strip and took offwith Peter in support. It was so quick that for a second no one knew what was happening. Oumar beat two defenders and offloaded to Peter who dotted down for a try. It took 18 seconds. An easy conversion for Joey and within the first minute a converted try was on the score board. Four minutes later, Deniel crossed the line after running 60 metres through the defence with some very impressive footwork. Equally as impressive was his support. Four Oemie players were on his flank as he scored under the post. The boys found their rhythm very quickly in the first half. The score going into the break was 27 – 14 to Oemoemenoe.
The second half started with ill-discipline on our part. Waterland drew a penalty against us and with a shot at goal, they gathered three points. Although Waterland put up a good fight, the game continued in our favour. Scrums were a strong feature where our boys dominated. Waterland made three changes to their front row as a counter measure but found little success. Coach Andi’s advice on the field was to keep playing smart. Points were taken in the form of penalties and the lead kept getting bigger and bigger. Oumar had an amazing game with a high tackle rate and reliable carries. He was chosen as player of the day. At the final whistle, a firm victory for Oemoemenoe, 40 points to 24. A bonus point secured.
After a very heavy week, the boys were happy they came away with a win. Special mention to Waterland for accommodating us before the game so we could acknowledge the loss of our family member. Rest in peace, Rens. This one was for you.
