After the Christmas break, we welcomed back to the team Nino, Rick and Philippe. It was good to see them back on the field and add a little more depth to the team. With Devin and Alvaro on vacation,a few changes needed to be made with Joey heading back in the centres again. The boys had a short rest over the holiday period, and it was always going to be a difficult task to meet the top of the table after such a rest. Full credit to Emeland though, they are at the top the table for a reason, they are a strong consistent team.

The first half of the game was dominated by the visiting team. Our scrummaging went well, Andi returned to Hooker, so his experience coupled with Nino and Gabor’s brut strength was an unstoppable combination. There were some very seasoned players in the vising team’s scrum but Oemoemenoe’s technique was superior. Emeland’s tries scored in the first 40 minutes were a mixture of complacent defence and good attacking opportunities. It’s unfortunate that we could not capitalise on our possession. Going into the half timebreak at 19-0 was a better score then our previous game, but a difficult score to come back from.

The second half saw more changes in our team, this seemed to relieve the pressure a bit as a whole. The boys held Emeland scoreless for a good period, but the visitors continued with their winning momentum and the fulltime score ended at 31-0. Some unlucky bounces or unfortunate kicks meant we could not finish the game with some points – but there was a lot to learn from playing Emeland.

Players of note, were Rick and Nino. Both had sound work rates in amongst the ball and it was good to see they had not missed a beat after their long break from the team. Yedney featured strongly in the back line. He made good yards and tackled well. Our player of the day was Deniel. Despite playing at less than 100% he made a real impact on the team. He was great at running the ball and linking up with his outside centres. A beast defensively. Congratulations, Deniel! It was a great game for you today.

Today’s game ended our first round of the trophy pool. We are sitting lower on the table than we had hope for, but we have a series of games where we can make up the points difference. The goal at this stage is to keep the finals in reach. Andi and I are really proud of the boys, rebuilding is no easy task, but as a team we believe we are still capable of making this season’s trophy final. Next week we are at home again, come on down and cheer on our boys!
