It was the third time in a month Oemoemenoe senior heren graced the playing ground at the Sport centrum in Delft. The field was soft. The top layer soil was damaged from the continuous strain of games. Not pretty. The weather was cooler than usual, but the sun was out and that was much better than the anticipated rain. A good day for rugby.
Winning attitude! Today’s emphasis was on creating a winning mentality by focussing on game structure. That was Coach Monty’s pre-game talk as the boys looked forward to hitting the green in over a month. The long break had given the team enough time for key players to recover from injury. The vibe amongst the boys was positive and with an injection of five players from our second team we had sufficient substitutions to be competitive.
The start was explosive, Oemoemenoe were dominant at break downs, maintained possession and territory. An early penalty was forced in our favour and Joey successfully put 3 points on the board. Daniel’s excellent reading of the game allowed him to score a very classy try with an intercept, with Joey and Yedney following suit, soon after. Devin crossed the line just before halftime leaving Oemie in the lead 27 points to 7.
During the half time talk, Coach Andi encouraged the team to maintain the systems and keep playing a clean game. After a comfortable lead, some changes were being considered to preserve players for later games and to raise the experience levels of our very capable Feeder players. Soon after the half time kick off, Chiel and Carlos took the field, to relieve Jose and Joshua from a very active 40 minutes.
Gabor, Andi and Alfie all scored tries in the second half. Gabor and Andi ran typically strong carries to cross the line. But it was Alfie’s try that defied what is expected from a front row player, a very clever dummy pass, a nice step and hitting his channel on a hard angle made for a very memorable try. Well done, Alvaro! It was beautiful to watch from the sideline. In general, our scrums were strong, and they have always been an asset for the senior heren. Our lineouts still need improvement. The backs ran great lines. There was one phase where the ball made it from one wing to the opposite wing and then back into the middle for a crash. It was text ball rugby showing great passing skill amongst our backline. The final score was 44 – 12 to Oemoemenoe. It was unlucky that Sydney’s try was disallowed from a controversial call from the linesman of a ‘forward pass’.
Mitchell was our player of the day. His work rate was spectacular. New to the second row, the close quarter contact suits Mitch’s instinctive play and allowed him to make numerous tackles and protect strongly around the rucks. Also, worth mentioning is Ben’s debut in Ereklasse! All in all, the boys and coaching staff were happy to take the win.
We have a home game next weekend. We have a score to settle with our opponents, Oysterwix. Come down and support us!
