It is always an honour playing a home game. The weather was hot and the home crowd were pretty rowdy after watching the Dames team.  We were able to field 15 players with substitutions. A big contrast to the previous week when we had only 13 players. The pre-game talk from Monty was, ‘stick to the system and if something doesn’t work, try to fix it’. Simple.

The first 15 minutes was a real battle. LSRG had brought their ‘A game’. Ball possession changed from team to team. Suddenly, Jeroen switched up the tempo by running a nice line through the defense. He gained a good 30 metres, and this set the attacking platform for the rest of the game. A scrum 5 metres from the line gave our boys the opportunity to show their strength. We won their ball in the scrum and Gabor came off the back with a nice try. The Forwards were consistent with running their system and it showed in the results. Gabor crossed the line twice, followed by Ben and then Jose. Going into half time the score was 31-0.

The second half focus was to keep working as a team. LSRG Forwards worked hard on defence. It became a Backs game in the second half with the ball making its way wide and tries resulting. Oumar scored twice and Max, Sidney and Jeroen also managed to cross the line. All five tries showed great speed and good footwork from our players. Jose followed up with a second try and sealed the deal for player of the day. LSRG never gave up though and in the last quarter turned on a good show to clinch a converted try. Poor discipline meant several penalties were awarded against us in the final moments. It looked like LSRG were going to take advantage of the penalties, but they lost the ball in a ruck. Chiel was quick to make the most of it. He scooped the ball and ran 68 meters through a determined LSRG team to cross the line. The final result, 78 – 7 to Oemoemenoe.
